Hidayat Heydarov leads Olympic sports athlete ranking for national teams
The Azerbaijan Ministry of Youth and Sports has announced the ranking list of athletes from national teams in Olympic sports as of November 2024, Azernews reports.
The judoka Hidayat Heydarov, who won a gold medal at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games with a total of 530 points, leads the list.
The team specialized in group rhythmic gymnastics, which achieved a historic result by securing fifth place at the Olympics, ranks second with 500 points, while judo athlete Zelim Kotsoyev, another gold medalist at the Olympic Games, is in third place with 430 points.
Following them in the rankings are Anna Skidan (hammer throw, 315 points), Balabay Aghayev (judo, 300 points), Eljan Hajiyev (judo, 300 points), Nikita Simonov (men's artistic gymnastics, 285 points), Yashar Najafov (judo, 240 points), Zohra Aghamirova (rhythmic gymnastics, 220 points), and Zelim Tckaev (judo, 220 points).
Calculation of ranking points is carried out according to the rules established by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. International competitions in various sports are divided into five categories based on their rankings, and points are awarded according to the places secured in these competitions.
Recall that Azerbaijani sportsmen achieved a historic milestone with a record-breaking 1472 medals last year.
Out of the total medal count, 799 medals (214 gold, 208 silver, and 377 bronze) were earned from the Olympics sports list, 587 medals (223 gold, 159 silver, and 205 bronze) from non-Olympic competitions, and 86 medals (27 gold, 31 silver, and 28 bronze) from the Paralympics sports list.
The Azerbaijani sportsmen were awarded in the following categories: Best Athlete of the Year, Best Women's and Men's Teams of the Year, Best Coach of the Year, Best Judge of the Year, Best Medical Staff of the Year, Best Sports Federation of the Year, Best Sports Club of the Year, etc.
At the 2024 Summer Olympics in France, Azerbaijani athletes won two gold (in judo), two silver (in taekwondo and boxing) and three bronze medals (in wrestling) during the competition.
For the first time since 2016, one Azerbaijani archer qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics women's individual recurve competitions.
