Transition to presidential republic in Turkey corresponds to Erdogan’s interests – expert

By putting forward the initiative on transition to a presidential government, the president of Turkey acts in his own interests, believes Mateusz Piskorski, director of the European Center for Geopolitical Analysis.

Speaking to Trend May 14, Piskorski said Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan thinks that in case if a new prime minister is appointed, certain differences and conflicts may arise between them, as it happened between Erdogan and his closest ally and, to some extent, political rival, Ahmet Davutoglu.

"Of course, as a politician, President Erdogan wants to control the whole administrative system," said the expert. "He will need to strengthen his position as a president for at least two terms."

The expert went on to add that this maneuver is often used by politicians who want to stay in power.

"At the end of his term, the Turkish president is likely to state about the need to return to a parliamentary system," said Piskorski. "Everything depends on the position he will be holding at that moment."

He added that the Turkish political system is now based on the realization of the interests of Erdogan, who is trying to stay in power.

President is elected for five years in Turkey.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan is the only Turkish president to be elected by universal suffrage.
