Iran, EU to establish working group on energy, climate

Iran and the European Union will set up a joint working group on climate action and energy, an Iranian minister said.

At a meeting with EU Climate Action and Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias Canete, Iran's Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian said that the working group will make efforts to expand bilateral ties in order to address the climate change issues, IRIB news agency reported.

Saying that Iran has rich energy resources, Chitchian called for expansion of ties with the EU in energy sector.

The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini visited Tehran on April 16, heading a high-ranking economic and political delegation .

The European delegation included EU Commissioners Elzbieta Bienkowska (Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs), Miguel Arias Canete (Climate Action and Energy), Christos Stylianides (Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management), Violeta Bulc (Transport), Carlos Moedas (Research, Science and Innovation), Karmenu Vella (Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries) and Tibor Navracsics (Education, Culture, Youth and Sport). They met with their Iranian counterparts.

During the visit, Iran and the EU talked about their long standing relations, based upon mutual respect and interests, reiterated their intention to develop a broad and comprehensive agenda for bilateral cooperation.

The sides announced their intention to foster improved conditions for investments and technology exchange in the production and generation of energy, and energy efficiency.
