Georgian ex-PM may lead national bank

Georgia’s acting Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili can chair the country’s national bank and replace Giorgi Kadagidze at this post, the Sputnik reported with reference to the Georgian media.

Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili left his post on December 23. Garibashvili gave no explanations or reasons on his resignation. He was the youngest head of government in Europe when he was appointed to the job in the former Soviet republic in November 2013.

Kadagizde, whose term of office expires in 2016, is one of the last officials in the current government, appointed during the presidency of Mikheil Saakashvili.

“In informal conversations, politicians say that the candidacy of Garibashvili is actively considered for the post of president of the National Bank of Georgia, but nothing has been decided yet,” the media reports.

Under the Georgian Constitution, suspension of the PM’s authority causes the same in terms of the government members. The President presents the candidate offered by the parliamentary majority within 7 days. In turn, the candidate will select new ministers and present them to the parliament.
