Uzbekistan holding Senate election
The joint meetings of the MPs of the representative bodies of the public authorities of Karakalpakstan Republic (Uzbekistan), provinces, districts and cities started off in Uzbekistan.
Members of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis – upper house of Uzbek parliament – will be elected during these meetings.
The election to Senate is held on Jan.13-14 in accordance with the resolution of Uzbek Central Election Commission (CEC).
The joint meetings of MPs of the representative bodies of the public authorities of Karakalpakstan Republic, Bukhara, Namangan, Samarkand, Surkhandarya, Tashkent, Fergana, Khorezm, Kashkadarya provinces will be held on Jan.13.
This is while the election of senators in Andijan, Jizzakh, Navoi, Syrdarya provinces and in the city of Tashkent will be held on Jan.14.
The parliament’s upper house - the Senate - employs 100 MPs. The term of office of the Senate is five years.
Under the country’s law, 84 members of the Senate are elected in equal numbers, i.e. six MPs from the Karakalpakstan Republic, provinces and the city of Tashkent.
The election is held by secret ballot at corresponding joint meetings of the MPs of the representative bodies of the public authorities from among these MPs.
Another 16 members of the Senate are appointed by Uzbek president from among the most distinguished citizens.
Uzbekistan’s bicameral parliament was created in 2005. Its legislative chamber permanently employs 150 MPs elected from four political parties and Uzbekistan’s Ecological Movement for the period of five years.
