Tbilisi calls on EU to ratify association agreement

Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili met with European Parliament's co-reporter on Georgia Anders Mamikins on September 9.

The sides discussed bilateral relations and the process that will follow the ratification of the association agreements with the EU.

Margvelashvili once again voiced his position, saying the process of ratification by each EU member-country should be done as quickly as possible. "This is a very important issue for Georgia," he stressed.

The president thanked the guest for the support to Georgia's territorial integrity and the interest that the European Parliament takes on Georgia.

The conversation also touched upon the situation in the region, Georgian-Russian relations and the Ukrainian events.

EU signed an Association Agreement with Georgia on June 27, 2014.

The Georgian side ratified its agreement with the EU on July 18. The agreement was supported by all 123 MP, registered at the meeting.

Now the Association Agreement between Georgia and the EU must be ratified by the parliaments of the 28 EU member-states.

The association agreements will help provide Georgia with entry into the EU free trade zone, a path towards economic modernization, higher living standards and a stronger democracy.
