Turkey and Georgia intend to implement a joint project on construction of a dam on the Kura River, Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yildiz said.

"Turkey is expected to finance around 80 percent of the project cost," he said.

Yildiz stressed that the new dam will be used at one of the hydropower plants of Georgia, Turkish Anadolu Agency reported.

He went on to add that during the visit of Turkish President Abdullah Gul to Georgia, the two sides reached an agreement on selling electricity to European markets through Turkey.

Georgia's power plants generated around 2,485,230,000 kilowatt per hour of electricity in January to March, 2014, while the country imported some 246.36 million kilowatt per hour of electricity in the first quarter of 2014.
