Georgia, EU to sign association agreement in 2014

Georgia to sign with the European Union an association agreement by fall 2014, Georgia's Deputy Foreign Minister Davit Zalkaliani said on Sept. 9, while commenting on the meeting of Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili and Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski in Latvia.
According to Sikorski, the signing ceremony will be held in fall 2014, after the initialing of the association agreement, which will be held at the Vilnius Summit.
Also, Zalkaliani drew a parallel with Ukraine, which waits the signing of the agreement for two years.
"The fact that the association agreement will be signed a few months after initialing of the agreement shows importance of the Eastern Partnerships countries, including Georgia for the EU," he said.
Georgia expects initialing of the association agreement with the EU at the Eastern Partnership Summit to be held in Vilnius on November 28-29. The Georgian government announced that it will make the best of efforts to achieve certain results.
Georgia started negotiations on Association Agreement in July 2010. It will replace the 1996 agreement with the EU on partnership and cooperation.
