Turkmenistan, Japan to ink agreements on cooperation in oil and gas sector

The report on preparation of documents of cooperation with Japan in oil and gas sphere was submitted to the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, the Turkmen government said.

The documents are planned to be signed during the upcoming visit of Turkmen delegation to Japan.

According to the report, Berdymukhamedov said Turkmenistan should pay special attention to the further development of long-term mutually beneficial cooperation with Japan.

The president also ordered to take all appropriate measures to ensure effective work in production facilities of oil and gas complex, which is the most important, strategic sector of Turkmen national economy.

Both Turkmenistan and Japan are interested in cooperation in various fields. According to official Tokyo, high technologies of Japan and rich natural resources of Turkmenistan are complementary.

Turkmenistan views the possibility of participation of Japanese companies in joint investment projects in petrochemical, gas processing, electrotechnical and other sectors of industry.

Turkmen president's official visit to Tokyo in 2009 gave impetus to the development of relations with Japan.

A number of intergovernmental documents and contracts were signed with Japanese companies, such as JGC Corporation, ITOCHU Corporation, Kawasaki Plant Systems Ltd and Sojitz Corporation, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries и Mitsubishi Corporation, Sojitz Corporation, Asahi Kasei Chemicals Corporation within this visit.

Furthermore, Japanese business circles show great interest to the establishment of full-scale cooperation with Turkmenistan.

In July 2013, Turkmen president received Executive vice President of Sony Company Shoji Nemoto who voiced several business proposals. According to him, Sony is ready to expand its presence in the Turkmen market.

In December 2012, Turkmen president received Executive vice President of ITOCHU Corporation Yoichi Kobayashi. During the meeting Kobayashi confirmed the interest of his company in strengthening positions in the promising Turkmen market and implementation of new joint projects.

Furthermore, Turkmenistan holds negotiations with the representatives of Japanese Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC).

A number of projects in Turkmenistan are implemented through JBIC commercial loans. The participation in the project for modernization of Fuel and Energy Complex, in particular, $1.6 billion worth modernization of the largest refinery plant of the country in Turkmenbashi is especially noticeable.
