Afghan officers to be trained in Georgia
Afghan officers will be able to undertake trainings at training bases in Georgia after 2014, Georgia's Minister of State for European Integration Alexi Petriashvili said at a news conference on June 19.
According to him, discussion and clarification is underway on the size of Georgian contingent to be represented in the mission in Afghanistan after 2014.
"With regard to logistics, we have already expressed our willingness to offer our rail infrastructure for the backhaul of troops and cargo. As for the Afghans, our military servicemen will act as their trainers and consultants. We have a very good training base in Georgia, and do not rule out the possibility of assistance on the matter," Petriashvili said.
According to him, the 2014 NATO Summit will mainly concentrate on the ISAF mission (International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan) and the moves of NATO partners as well as whether Afghanistan will take full control of the situation into its own hands or the alliance will partly remain in this country.
"The contingent will be reduced, but that does not mean that there will not be a single American, English, Georgian or Australian soldier in 2014. The major part will leave, but some will remain to make it impossible for Taliban to once again strengthen its position," Petriashvili said.
