Kazakhstan's population reaches 16.9 million
The number of Kazakhs reached 11.174 million as of January 1, the Kazakh Statistics Agency said on May 15.
"Newborn Mukhtar Abdrakhimu is an eleven millionth Kazakh," the agency said. "He was born and registered by the Kazygurt civil registry in South Kazakhstan region on December 28, 2012. His birth weight was 3,258 grams and height - 52 cm."
The report stressed that his parents live in the Karabau village, Kazygurt region. His mother Sholpan Kudirbekova is a teacher and his father Malik Badambaev is engaged in agriculture.
According to the Statistics Agency, as of April 1, the country's specified population is 16.967 million people, including 11.580 million Kazakhs or 65.2 percent, 3.698 million Russian (21.8 percent), Uzbeks - 511,000 people (3 percent), Ukrainians - 306,000 people (1.8 percent), Uighurs - 243,000 (1.4 percent), Tatars - 203,000 (1.2 percent), Germans - 182,000 people (1.1 percent) and other ethnic groups - 766,000 people (4.5 percent).
