Georgian parliament overcame presidential veto on changes to law "On general courts"
Georgian Parliament overcame a presidential veto on changes to
the law "On general courts" on Wednesday.
91 MPs voted for overcoming the veto, while 26 MPs were against.
The quorum for a decision was 89 votes.
Georgian President has vetoed the changes to the law, which
concerns the formation of the Council of Justice. The Georgian
Parliament has changed the formula for picking the highest judicial
body of Georgia, depriving the president's right to represent his
candidates.
According to Chairman of Parliament David Usupashvili, after
overcoming a presidential veto on the draft law "On general
courts," the project is now back on the signing to President
Saakashvili and if he did not sign it in time of two weeks, then it
will be signed by the Speaker and will enter into force.
The president will then be able to challenge the decision in the
Constitutional Court.
