Kazakh leader has no plans to increase Astana's population

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev does not intend to turn Astana into a multi-million city.

The president made this statement at a meeting on the further development of the capital on Monday.

"Astana's population hits about 800,000 inhabitants," he said. "I have no intention to increase it up to some millions."

He stressed that new buildings and houses will be built in Astana in the future, but not for the population growth.

"New buildings and houses will be built in the future to provide the country with necessary facilities, rather than for the population growth," he said. "Every house must have special architecture... rather than build dormitories for everyone as during Khrushchev's period. The government together with the akim must think how to limit the increase in the population without necessity. Every house must be unique in architecture and quality. It is necessary to allow constructing the houses and allot the land plots."
