Iran says Bushehr NPP undergoing final tests
The Bushehr nuclear power plant is undergoing a series of tests,
carried out by the Russian experts, Head of Iran's Atomic Energy
Organization, Fereydoon Abbasi Davani said, Mehr news agency
reported.
"The plant currently is in testing stage, some more tests need to
be taken before it can switch to normal work," Abbasi said.
Abbasi noted that there were some news circulating in the media
about the closure of the Bushehr plant, and revealed the reasons
for the temporary closure.
"The plant was off the network due to technical issues. This is
natural. There were some problems with the turbine generator.
Currently the Russian team is preparing the necessary equipment for
further testing, and after a few days, the plant will be
re-connected to the grid," Abbasi said.
The construction of the nuclear power plant near Bushehr was
launched in 1975. Then the work on the NPP building was carried out
by a West German company.
However, in 1980, West Germany joined the US sanctions against Iran
and the construction was stopped.
On August 24, 1992, Russia and Iran signed an agreement on
cooperation in peaceful uses of nuclear energy. And on next day -
on August 25, 1992, the parties agreed to continue the construction
of the Bushehr NPP.
In January 1995, the sides signed a contract on the completion of
the first power unit of the NPP. Last August, the power unit
reached 100-percent design capacity.
