Saudi Foreign Minister Saud bin Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud called the Syrian opposition for unity to avoid a split of the country, Trend news agency reported, referring to "Al Arabiya" TV channel on Wednesday.

He also added that the Syrian opposition can rule the country after the fall of the current regime and the Arab countries will be help it in every way.

"Change in the positions of countries supporting the Assad regime is one more step toward a solution to the problem," Faisal said.

Anti-government protests have continued in Syria for a year and half.

More than 230,000 have become refugees with around three million in need of humanitarian assistance. The Syrian authorities say they oppose the well-armed militants.
