Turkey's ruling party proposes presidential republic
Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party has submitted a proposal to pass from a parliamentary to a presidential republic for parliamentary discussion, the Anadolu news agency said on Tuesday.
It is planned to provide the president with significant powers by transferring the real power from Prime Minister to the country's president within the proposed law.
As opposed to the previous elections, when the president was elected by the parliament, the Turkish new president will be elected through direct elections for the first time in 2014, according to the amendments to the constitution.
According to opinion polls, current Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has most chances for the victory.
