Court sentences mass killer Breivik to 21 years of imprisonment
A Norwegian court has found confessed mass killer Anders Behring Breivik sane and sentenced him to 21 years in jail for a bomb and gun rampage that left 77 people dead last year.
The Oslo district court on August 24 declared Breivik, 33, to be mentally fit for prison.
The 21-year sentence could be extended if Breivik is deemed to be still a danger to society.
The court rejected the prosecution's request for an "insane" verdict, which would have committed Breivik to a psychiatric institution.
Breivik himself had argued for a sane verdict, saying he wanted the attack to be seen as a political statement against multiculturalism.
In July 2011, Breivik detonated a bomb outside government headquarters in Oslo, killing eight, before gunning down 69 others at the ruling party's summer youth camp.
