Ukraine's parliament votes to affirm no elections until war ends

The Ukrainian parliament has voted to support a resolution backing democracy in the country, declaring that elections are impossible until the war with Russia concludes, Golos MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak reported on Telegram on Feb. 25, Azernews reports.
The resolution, officially titled "Statement of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Supporting Democracy in Ukraine Amid Russian Aggression," passed with 268 votes on its second attempt, surpassing the required 226, under bill No. 13039.
The lawmakers stressed that both it and Zelenskyy were elected in free, transparent, democratic elections recognized by the international community, with international observers present.
The statement also said that martial law, imposed during Russia’s full-scale invasion, prevents elections under Ukraine’s Constitution.
“At the same time, the Ukrainian people are united in believing such elections should happen after the war ends,” the statement reads.
“The Verkhovna Rada declares that, as a democratic nation, Ukraine will announce presidential elections by parliamentary decision once comprehensive, just, and sustainable peace is secured, ensuring they meet all international electoral standards.”
