This month, universities across China launched artificial intelligence (AI) courses based on the Chinese startup DeepSeek, whose breakthrough in AI has attracted global attention, Azernews reports.

This move comes at a time when Chinese authorities are eager to stimulate scientific and technological innovation within schools and universities, aiming to create new sources of growth for the world’s second-largest economy.

Hangzhou-based startup DeepSeek has garnered significant praise from Silicon Valley executives and engineers from major American technology companies. They assert that DeepSeek's DeepSeek-V3 and DeepSeek-R1 models are on par with the most advanced models from OpenAI and Meta, according to a report by Reuters.

Shenzhen University, Zhejiang University, Jiaotong University in Shanghai, and Renmin University have all announced the launch of AI courses based on DeepSeek’s technology. These courses aim to provide students with knowledge on key AI technologies, while also addressing important topics such as security, privacy, ethics, and other related concerns.

In January, China released its first national action plan to establish a "strong educational nation" by 2035. The plan outlines the goal of creating a "high-quality education system" with accessibility and excellence that ranks among the best in the world.

China’s push to integrate AI into its education system highlights the growing importance of AI and innovation for the country's future development. By fostering talent in AI, China is not only aiming to position itself as a leader in the field but also to equip the next generation with the skills needed to drive its technological and economic advancement.

This development also signals China’s broader focus on technological self-reliance, as it aims to reduce dependency on foreign companies in key areas such as AI, and ensure its place at the forefront of the global technological race.
