Cyber Monday is continuation of Black Friday on Internet

The Monday following Black Friday, which kicks off the sales season in the United States between Thanksgiving and Christmas, is known as "Cyber Monday," Azernews reports.

While Black Friday marks the start of in-store holiday sales, Cyber Monday is its online counterpart.

Cyber Monday was created in 2005 by savvy sellers, specifically to cater to office workers who, after the in-store Black Friday shopping, would return to their offices on Monday and continue shopping online.

The term "Cyber Monday" was coined by Shop.org, a division of the National Retail Federation of the USA. Scott Silverman, the executive director of the organization, explained that the term was inspired by market research showing that 77 percent of online retailers experienced a significant increase in sales on the Monday after Thanksgiving in 2004. The idea was that customers who enjoyed Black Friday sales would continue shopping online on Monday, even from their office computers, or simply to begin their holiday gift shopping.

Cyber Monday is often viewed as the day of the most active online shopping in the United States, with shoppers continuing their purchases while at work.

According to statistics from online stores in the United States, the busiest shopping days of the year typically fall between December 5 and December 15.

Cyber Monday has grown in popularity beyond the United States, with countries such as Argentina, Canada, Chile, China, England, Japan, Russia, and many others adopting the day, although it is not always tied to Black Friday and is celebrated on different dates. For example, in Russia, "Cyber Monday" in 2025 will begin on January 27 at exactly 00:00.

In addition to its rapid expansion globally, Cyber Monday is often recognized for offering some of the best online deals, including discounts on electronics, clothing, home goods, and more. Many shoppers look forward to the event for exclusive promotions and limited-time offers, making it one of the largest online shopping days of the year.
