German opposition leaders reach agreement on date of snap elections

After the political crisis that started with the collapse of the coalition that formed the federal government in Germany, an agreement was reached between the main political parties on the date of the early parliamentary elections.

The coalition Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the opposition Christian Union parties (CDU/CSU) have agreed to hold early parliamentary elections on February 23 next year. The Greens and the Free Democratic Party (FDR) also supported this decision.

CDU leader Friedrich Mertz, Green Party parliamentary faction co-chairs Britta Hasselman and Katharina Dröge, SPD parliamentary faction chairman Rolf Mütsenich met with President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in the evening of November 12 at Bellevue Palace to discuss the date of the early parliamentary elections. . At the meeting, the President agreed to hold the extraordinary parliamentary elections on February 23.

It should be noted that Chancellor Olaf Scholtz from the SPD plans to hold the vote of confidence in the government on December 16. According to the Constitution of the country, if the Bundestag does not show confidence in the government, the President must make a decision to dissolve the parliament within 21 days according to the Constitution. Extraordinary elections must be held within 60 days after the dissolution of the Parliament.
