Morocco spends over $800 million on restoration of more than 20 medieval neighborhoods

The Moroccan government has spent more than $800 million on restoration projects for 21 Medina (medieval quarter) in various cities of the kingdom, Azernews reports.

According to him, "the ancient madinahs represent the material and humanitarian heritage of the kingdom." In addition, the authorities are implementing a program for the restoration and improvement of ancient fortresses (kasbah) and fortified settlements (ksars) located in different regions of Morocco.

Madinahs, kasbahs and ksars are very popular with foreign tourists and are invariably included in travel routes. The most famous ancient neighborhoods listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site are located in the cities of Marrakech, Meknes, Rabat, Tetouan, Fez, Essaouira.

The most famous Ksar - Ait Ben Haddu - is located 30 km west of the southern Moroccan city of Ouarzazate and as a decoration has repeatedly become a filming location for films such as "Lawrence of Arabia", "Pearl of the Nile", "Under the Cover of Heaven", "Gladiator", "Kingdom of Heaven", "Cleopatra"and many others.
