Electric power industry is becoming an important new direction in the development of Iran.

Speaking at a press conference in Saveh city, MP Mohammad Reza Mansuri said that the largest power plant construction in the Middle East with a capacity of 3,000 MW is on the agenda.

He added that the production capacity of the new power plant will be three times more than that of the current largest power plant in the country.

The MP noted that the construction project will cover an area of 4,000 hectares, privately owned in Saveh city. He added that private sector will fund the $6.5 billion project.

Iran’s nominal capacity for electricity production after connecting a number of power plants to the country's national network reached more than 80,000 MW in December.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference in Tehran in February 2018, Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian stressed the country's self-sufficiency in electricity production and said that Iran is the main producer of electricity in the Middle East.

"We currently have energy exchanges with all countries that have land borders with us," he said.

One of the priorities of the four-year program for the development of Iran (2017-2021) is to increase the potential for the production of various types of energy, including electricity.

Based on this, Iran has developed a document on the future of electricity production in order to achieve a production level of more than 100,000 MW/h of electricity based on a variety of production methods, including using solar and wind power plants or combined cycle power plants.

Iran intends to invest more than $50 billion in the production and distribution of electricity in the next seven years.
