Uzbekistan decides on potential site for construction of nuclear power plant

Uzbekistan has chosen a potential site for the construction of the nuclear power plant (NPP), Podrobno.uz reported.

This place has turned out to be Tudakul Lake, located on the border of Navoi and Bukhara regions of Uzbekistan.

"Now, 3-4 potential sites are being studied near the Tudakul Lake. It is necessary to choose the most suitable one. Basically, it’s about choosing a place with the best soil characteristics, so that it would be stable and rocky. For this purpose, the sites have been chosen on both the eastern and western shores of the lake. The geological work is underway, more than 50 wells are being drilled currently. At the end of the study, the best place will be chosen," the Deputy Director of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan Ilham Sadykov said.

He noted that at the initial stage of the NPP construction project, 70 sites across the country were selected, then 10 sites were shortlisted in March.

It is planned to build in Uzbekistan a station consisting of two modern units of the VVER-1200 model of “3+” generation. Their commissioning has been scheduled for 2028.

As a result of the launch of the nuclear power plant, 3.7 billion cubic meters of natural gas will be saved. Even if the saved gas is exported without being refined, $550-600 million per year will go into the budget of Uzbekistan.

In addition, the volume of carbon monoxide generated from the combustion of natural gas and emitted into the atmosphere, will be reduced by 3 million tons per year.
