Turkmenistan among Top 5 countries for producing iodine
By Ali Mustafayev
Turkmenistan actively develops iodine industry, planning to increase supplies of this product to the world market.
Turkmenistan ranks fourth in iodine reserves, and is in the fifth place for iodine production in the world, reports Neutral Turkmenistan.
One of the country's oldest enterprises is the Khazar chemical plant in the Balkan velayat (oblast), which operates on local raw materials - underground iodine-containing natural and associated waters received during the oil and gas production.
The plant, primarily, specializes in the production of two brands of technical iodine - “A” and “Ч”. The differences between these two marks are in consistency and extent of purification.
The plant also produces acid potassium, based on the current production line of potassium iodide, which is widely used in animal husbandry.
Iodine is a chemical element with symbol I. The heaviest of the stable halogens, it exists as a lustrous, purple-black metallic solid at standard conditions that sublimes readily to form a violet gas.
Iodine production is possible only in tens and hundreds of tonnes. It leads to the acute demand of iodine in the world market.
The chemical plant “Khazar” specializes on the production of technical iodine of the high purity. The plant is awarded with the golden medal of quality by the Business Initiative Directions committee.
To increase the volume of commodity output the plant will be reconstructed in near future. The annual capacity of the production will be increased to 350 tonnes of granulated iodine and 5,000 tonnes of bromine-containing products.
The development of the iodine production leads to the expansion of the iodine products’ assortment and allows Turkmenistan to remain as one of the leaders of this industry in the world.
