NATO not plans to use Georgian ports

NATO has no plans to use Georgian ports at the time for establishing security in the region, while the Alliance hopes for Georgia’s integration to the block.

The alliance is intending to ensure the security in the Black Sea with the forces of a multinational brigade in Romania, NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller told Georgia’s Rustavi 2 TV channel, APA reported.

“In the current stage, NATO is not planning to deploy its forces in Georgian ports”, Gottemoeller stressed.

At the same time, the declaration the NATO Parliamentary Assembly adopted on May 29 regarding Georgia demonstrates that the alliance supports the process of Georgia becoming a member of NATO block.

Georgian Prime Minister Georgy Kvirikashvili stressed the importance of the document as he met with Gottemoeller in Tbilisi.

Gottemoeller pledged NATO’s support in the process of reforming and strengthening Georgia’s defense capacity.

The declaration is urging allied governments to provide “strong political and practical support” as Georgia moves closer to the Alliance.

By supporting the document, the NATO PA Assembly reaffirmed its support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.

The resolution declares that Georgia’s relationship with the alliance contains all practical tools to prepare for eventual membership, while taking note of the position of allied leaders that Georgia will become a member of NATO through the Membership Action Plan (MAP) as an integral part of the process.
