Uzbekistan, Tajikistan plan to ink documents on customs cooperation

The government of Tajikistan approved on April 27 drafts of two documents aimed at developing cooperation with Uzbekistan.

The documents were approved following the meeting of the government, which was chaired by President Emomali Rahmon, the press service of the Tajik president reported.

The draft protocol between the Customs Service of Tajikistan and the State Customs Committee of Uzbekistan on cooperation and mutual assistance in customs matters presupposes information exchange, simplification of customs procedures and exchange of experience, as well as investigation and prevention of customs offenses.

The draft of another protocol of interaction between the customs authorities of the two countries is aimed at the exchange of customs statistics between countries, correct definition of the real state of bilateral external trade turnover, prevention of smuggling of goods and vehicles, analysis of the state of real economic development, balance of payments, compliance with tax and customs legislation.

The documents are expected to be signed in the near future.

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Uzbekistan were established on October 22, 1992.

The legal base of bilateral Tajik-Uzbek relations includes 111 contracts and agreements signed at the interstate, intergovernmental and interdepartmental levels in the period from 1992 to the present.

The approved documents between two countries cover all the key areas of cooperation between two countries and provide a solid legal basis for the further strengthening of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan in the political, economic, trade and other areas.

Regarding the economy, the trade turnover between the two countries grew 5.7 times to $69.2 million in 2016, according to the Tajik statistics.
