Erdogan to join rallies before constitutional referendum
By Trend
Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will participate in agitation rallies before the referendum on amendments to the Turkish Constitution, the country’s media outlets reported.
Erdogan supports the adoption of amendments to the Turkish Constitution which envisage introduction of a presidential system of government in the country instead of the existing parliamentary system.
Agitation rallies will start in mid-February. Erdogan intends to take part in 40 rallies in various cities of the country.
A referendum on amendments to the Constitution can be held in early April. According to the amendments, the number of seats in the Turkish Parliament will increase from 550 to 600.
It is also suggested that Turkish citizens run for the MP seats from the age of 18. Currently, the lowest age limit is 25.
It is offered to hold parliamentary elections every 5 years. Currently, the parliamentary elections are held every 4 years.
A Turkish citizen not younger than 40 can become president of the country, according to the amendments.
The Turkish president will also have the power to appoint ministers and replace them. The president-elect will not be obliged to be a non-party nominee any more.
