New head of EU delegation delivers credentials to Uzbek FM

Eduards Stiprais, the newly appointed head of the EU delegation in Uzbekistan, delivered copies of credentials to Abdulaziz Kamilov, the country’s foreign minister, the Uzbek foreign ministry said in a message.
According to the message, during the meeting, Kamilov and Stiprais discussed the prospects of further development of bilateral relations in political, trade-economic, investment, cultural-humanitarian and other spheres.
Kamilov and Stiprais stressed that strengthening of the Uzbekistan-EU relations is in the interests of both sides, the message said.
According to the message, the sides also exchanged views on certain international and regional issues.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini approved Stiprais head of the EU delegation in Uzbekistan in late August 2016.
Prior to his appointment to Uzbekistan, Stiprais served as deputy secretary of state -. political director of the Foreign Ministry of Latvia.
Uzbekistan and the EU signed an agreement on 'Partnership and Cooperation ' in 1996. Diplomatic representation of the EU in Uzbekistan opened in 2012.
The amount of the EU’s financial assistance to Uzbekistan in 2014-2020 was approved in the amount of 168 million euros. These funds will be directed at improving irrigation infrastructure, introduction of renewable energy sources in agribusiness, promoting the program to create new jobs in the regions.
