Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani will discuss military-technical cooperation in Baku

“The Iranian side is interested in modern Russian military equipment,” Russian president’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Izvestiya newspaper.

Leaders of Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia, are scheduled to meet in Baku on August 8.

In turn, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who is responsible for the military-industrial complex, will be within the Russian delegation.

The future perspectives of North-South Transport Corridor will be discussed in the meeting as well. The route primarily involves moving freight from India, Iran, Azerbaijan and Russia via ship, rail and road. Development of the international transport corridor is expected to reduce transport costs and strengthen the trade relations between the countries.

The North-South transportation corridor is meant to connect Northern Europe to South-East Asia. It will serve as a link connecting the railways of Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia.

At the initial stage, the North-South corridor will transport 5 million tons of cargo per year with further expansion of transportation to over 10 million tons.

Earlier, Russian Transport minister Igor Levitin said that Azerbaijan, Russia and Iran are considering the sources of funding the construction of the railway as a part of the North-South transport corridor.

Iran and Russia are strategic allies and form an axis in the Caucasus alongside Armenia. After the Western sanctions imposed on Iran, Russia became a key trading partner for Iran in the oil sector. Militarily, Iran is the only country in Western Asia that has been invited to join to Russia's own international treaty organization- Collective Security Treaty Organization.

Cooperating with both main key actors in the region together will positively affect tourism, energy and trade spheres of Azerbaijan.

In addition, the consequences of the meeting may positively affect the future status of the Caspian Sea.
