Nigerian MP: It is time for action, not just words at COP29 [EXCLUSIVE]
At the opening of COP29, Nigerian Member of Parliament St. Andy Kama NkemKanma shared his initial impressions of the event and outlined his key expectations for the climate summit. In a conversation with Azernews, NkemKanma expressed optimism about the smooth proceedings so far, emphasizing the importance of the conference's focus on climate finance.
"Everything is going on smoothly, smooth transition, and everything seems to be going very well so far," NkemKanma remarked, indicating a positive start to the conference. However, he also acknowledged that past COP meetings have often been marked by discussions without sufficient concrete outcomes, especially regarding climate finance.
Action, Not Just Talk, on Climate Finance
When asked about the steps needed to ensure climate finance finally translates into real-world action, NkemKanma was clear in his call for urgent change. "The developed countries should remove some of the bottlenecks in getting the finance down to poorer countries," he said. He emphasized that the current barriers make it difficult for funds to flow to those who need them most, especially in developing nations. "As I keep saying, we've been talking and talking for too long. It's time for action."
He highlighted the importance of providing financial incentives for countries, particularly those in Africa, to take meaningful climate action. "People need incentives. Some countries need that financial support to be able to do certain things. This should be considered," NkemKanma stressed. As a representative from Nigeria, he underscored the significance of his country’s stability for the broader African continent. "Nigeria is the epicenter of Africa, and a stable, self-sufficient Nigeria would stabilize the whole of Africa. If Nigeria is stable, Africa will be stable," he stated, further advocating for international support to ensure Nigeria's resilience and capacity to lead climate action in the region.
A Call for Full Implementation of Agreements
Looking ahead, NkemKanma shared his primary aim for the conclusion of COP29. While climate finance remains a central issue, he emphasized the need for decisive actions that go beyond mere commitments. "The most important thing for me is that whatever decisions are made here are implemented to the core—no half measures," he said firmly.
NkemKanma expressed hope that COP29 would result in concrete steps that would ensure climate finance reaches the countries that need it, enabling them to take the necessary actions. "I pray that, at the end of the day, finance action is taken seriously and that every country gets the funding and support it requires," he added.
In closing, NkemKanma's comments reflected the need for urgency and accountability as world leaders come together at COP29 to address the escalating climate crisis. With a focus on removing financial barriers and ensuring full implementation of agreements, his message was clear: it's time to move beyond talk and take meaningful action.
