SOCAR preparing for new project at Oil Rocks

Having opened a new page in the oil industry of Azerbaijan in the middle of the 20th century, Oil Rocks still produces "black gold" and "blue fuel".

Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR is preparing for the implementation of Mayak project at Oil Rocks, Public Relations Head at SOCAR Ibrahim Ahmadov told Trend.

Mayak project is aimed at increasing productivity in the oil and gas production sphere.

"Currently, we continue to work out new initiative proposals within 28 May and Absheronneft oil and gas extraction departments and are preparing for the implementation of this project at Oil Rocks," he said.

Ahmadov noted that in general, it is possible to implement this project in all oil and gas, as well as gas and condensate fields, developed under the direct operational management of SOCAR.

Mayak project is implemented within Azneft production union of SOCAR in collaboration with McKinsey&Company.

The project’s pilot part was implemented by 28 May oil and gas extraction department of Azneft.

The Oil Rocks was discovered in 1949. The first oil platform in Azerbaijan, the Oil Rocks was also the first operating offshore oil platform in the world. Intensive development began in 1950. The first oil tanker was launched from Oil Rocks in 1951. An industrial settlement 100 miles off the coast of Baku, the Oil Rocks is a complete town on the Caspian Sea.

Established in 1992, the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) is one of the world's 50 largest oil companies. SOCAR's mission is to ensure the energy security of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Currently, SOCAR is the only producer of oil products in the country, and also operates more than 370 filling stations in Switzerland, Georgia, Romania and Ukraine.

The company includes such production associations as Azneft (the enterprises producing oil and gas onshore and offshore), Azerikimya (the chemical enterprises) and Azerigas (distributor of gas produced in the country), as well as oil and gas processing plants, service companies, and the facilities involved in geophysical and drilling operations.

SOCAR production totaled 7.54 million tons of oil and 6.53 billion cubic meters of gas in 2018.
