Qatar joining Nabucco pipeline
Qatar, which is flush with hydrocarbon reserves,
will supply gas for the Nabucco pipeline that will run to Europe
through Turkey bypassing Russia, Turkish media reported.
Turkey and the resource-rich Gulf state have reportedly reached a
verbal agreement on building a pipeline to link the two
countries.
Qatar holds the world`s third-largest gas reserves, which are
estimated at over 8.5 trillion cubic meters.
The 3,300-kilometer Nabucco pipeline, which will run from eastern
Turkey to the Austrian capital Vienna, is expected to come online
in 2014. Azerbaijan, Iraq and Egypt will become the main suppliers
for Nabucco, which will carry 31 billion cubic meters of gas
annually, when fully operational. Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan,
Uzbekistan and Iran are considered potential suppliers as well.
The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, who visited
Turkey last week, said in a meeting with Prime Minister Recep
Tayyip Erdogan that both countries were interested in implementing
the project, affirming Qatar`s approval of constructing the gas
pipeline.
Qatar`s gas has to be transported to Turkey over a distance of
2,300 kilometers. The pipeline is to be routed onshore through
Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq.
In conclusion of the meetings held during the emir`s visit, an
agreement was signed on Qatar`s selling 4 billion cubic meters of
liquefied gas to Turkey at the current stage. The fuel will be
transported by tankers.
