Azerbaijan to intensify activity within European Energy Charter
By Nigar Abbasova
Azerbaijan, one of the signatories of the European Energy Charter, aims to take appropriate measures for the development of relations within the international agreement.
The issue of cooperation within the Charter was high on agenda during the meeting between Azerbaijan’s Energy Minister Natig Aliyev and Secretary General of the Charter Urban Rusnak, who arrived in Baku to attend the 7th International Forum “Energy for Sustainable Development.”
The charter is considered to be a concise expression of the principles that should underpin international energy cooperation, based on a shared interest in secure energy supply and sustainable economic development.
Aliev said that Azerbaijan is ready to share its experience in the sphere of the transit of energy resources and provide the necessary technical support.
Rusnak, in turn, informed the minister about the ongoing activities of the Energy Charter, including the work on drafting of a Multilateral Framework Agreement on Energy Transit, mentioning that the preparation of the agreement is of great importance for the organization.
He said that the experience of Azerbaijan in the sphere may give an important impetus to this process, emphasizing that Azerbaijan, thanks to the turning into an energy exporter in a short period of time and the status acquired by the country in the sphere of global energy security is perceived by the organization as an example for other countries.
He emphasized that it is important to sign a new legal document to deepen cooperation with Azerbaijan during the next five years.
The sides also discussed the participation of a delegation of Azerbaijan in the 27th session of the Energy Charter Conference in Tokyo.
