Jordan supports Azerbaijan's position on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

Jordan supports Azerbaijan's fair position in settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and resolution of the conflict only on the principles of territorial integrity and inviolability of borders of Azerbaijan, said Prime Minister Artur Rasizade on May 11.

He was addressing a meeting with a delegation headed by Speaker of the House of Representatives of the parliament of Jordan Atef Yousef Saleh Al-Tarawneh.

Rasizade noted that Azerbaijan and Jordan cooperate in tourism, trade, culture, investment and other spheres.

Atef Yousef Saleh Al-Tarawneh, in his turn, noted that Jordan attaches great importance to the relations with Azerbaijan and shows particular interest to cooperation with this most developed country in the region.

Jordan has always supported Azerbaijan’s just stance over settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. In 2013, the Jordanian Senate adopted a resolution on the Armenia-committed Khojaly genocide. The document condemned aggression against the Azerbaijani Muslim nation, gross violation of human rights, and called on Armenia to fulfill resolutions of the UN Security Council demanding unconditional withdrawal of all its forces from the occupied lands of Azerbaijan.

The conflict between two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding regions. More than 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed and over 1 million were displaced as a result of the large-scale hostilities. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.

Armenia still controls fifth part of Azerbaijan's territory and rejects implementing four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding districts.
