Baku 2015 to be great success, UK envoy says
By Nigar Orujova
There will be around 165 British athletes coming to Azerbaijan to participate in the Games, UK Ambassador to Baku Irfan Siddiq told Trend on April 21.
“Britain will be well represented at the Games and I hope we’ll see some British athletes winning gold medals,” the diplomat stressed.
He went on to add there will be a large number of officials and family members coming to Baku.
“The technical preparations for the First European Games in Baku have been very impressive,” Siddiq said.
The new stadia and facilities being built are all of a very high quality and will leave a lasting legacy in Azerbaijan, he noted.
“I’ve been lucky to visit a few of the venues for test events and have been very impressed with the organization and preparations so far,” he said.
Azerbaijan has hired many international experts, including many people who worked on the London 2012 Olympic Games, to help ensure the Games are well organized, Siddiq noted.
“So from an organizational point of view, I am sure the Games will be a great success,” he said.
The grandiose event of this year, inaugural European Games, will gather 6,000 athletes from 50 countries to compete in 20 sports, 16 of which are Olympic.
France, Russia, and a number of other countries have already reported on the list of the sportsmen to come to Baku in June 12-28.
