Armenia escalates tensions with new provocations

By Sara Rajabova

Azerbaijani Defense Ministry has said the military-political regime in Armenia still continues to make irresponsible statements with full of threats against Azerbaijan.

The ministry said Armenia, deceiving its people and pulling it to the provocation, is pursuing an aggressive policy against Azerbaijan, adding this is the result of the country’s misjudge of the real situation that formed at present in the region.

“The enemy must recognize the importance of the withdrawal of its troops from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan and should not involve the Armenian youth in the war,” the ministry stressed.

The ministry went on to add that Azerbaijani Armed Forces are able and ready to prevent any provocation of the enemy.

The ministry said in case the enemy side once again dares to commit any military operation, then the Azerbaijani side will answer with immediate blow struck that will leading to huge losses by Armenia and destruction.

An Armenian MI-24 helicopter flying 1,700 meters northeast of the Kengerli village of Azerbaijan’s Aghdam region attacked the Azerbaijani army positions on November 12. The helicopter was shot down by the Azerbaijani side.

The three crew members on the board of MI-24 helicopter were revealed to be Armenian army's servicemen, who illegally joined the so-called "NKR army." Armenian government made all efforts to deny this fact that the dead crew belonged to its army, but a quick research about the identity of the deceased soldiers revealed that they were Armenian servicemen.

Despite the calls by the international community on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict parties, Armenia still keeps high the tension on the contact line of troops.

Following the last three meetings between presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia on peaceful resolution of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the Armenian side sharply aggravated the tension on the contact line of Armenian and Azerbaijani troops with further provocations.

During the past several days, the Armenian armed forces shattered ceasefire about 70 times throughout a day. The Armenians were silenced with a retaliatory fire.

The recent presidential meetings between the Azerbaijan and Armenia have been considered as a new step in decreasing tension creating hope for the settlement of the long-lasting Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

However, Armenia’s continuous disruptive moves that harshly violate the international law show that the occupant country which has invaded the 20 percent of its neighbor’s territory is not interested in peace.

Armenia’s moves confirm that it is in favor of keeping the status quo unchanged. It speaks in one way, but acts in another, i.e. makes statements calling for peace in one hand, however, holds military drills in occupied Azerbaijani territories and violates its borders on the other hand.

Following the sharp aggravation of the tension on the contact line, the OSCE will monitor the frontline.

The OSCE mission will hold a monitoring on the troops` line of contact near Marzili village, Azerbaijan`s Aghdam region on November 18 in accordance with the mandate of the Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, the Defense Ministry said.

OSCE mission regularly holds monitoring on the contact line of Armenian and Azerbaijani troops, but has revealed no incident even during the escalation of tension between conflicting sides.

Despite the facts that it came under the fire of the Armenian bullets for several times, the OSCE hasn’t taken a decisive action to avoid such situation.

The OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs didn't mention the ceasefire violation by the Armenian armed forces during the monitoring in mid-October. The Armenian militaries opened fire on the contact line of troops on October 16 before passing of the monitoring group to the opposite side.

This is not the only case when Armenian armed forces violate the ceasefire during the OSCE monitoring. In early 2014, the OSCE monitoring group was forced to delay its monitoring operation due to heavy shelling by the Armenian armed forces.
