Currently, Yusif is the most popular name in Azerbaijan, the Justice Department reports.

A total of 2702 boys, born in Azerbaijan during the nine months of the current year have been named Yusif.

Apart from Yusif, other popular boy names are as follow: Ali (1735), Huseyn (1705), Omar (1098), Mahammad (962), Ibrahim (644), Kanan (616) and Nihad (609).

The most popular girl name of this year is Zahra, which has been given to 2412 newborns.

Other frequent names, which Azerbaijani parents called their daughters are Nuray (1747), Fatima (1651), Ayan (1200), Aylin (1254), Zeynab (1145), Khadica (903), Madina (779), Leila (763), Fidan (742), Gulay (739) and Nazrin (610).

Zahra (15905) and Yusif (15819) have been the leading names of Azerbaijanis newborns withinh the last five years.

Over the past few years, the parents tend to choose old, original, rare or strange names for their children.
