Azerbaijani foreign minister says regional stability is under threat until the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is resolved.

Elmar Mammadyarov made the remarks at a meeting with a delegation of Council of Europe (CoE), headed by Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland on May 22, the foreign ministry said.

Briefing the European delegation about the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, he said, as a first step in resolving the conflict, Armenian armed forces should withdraw from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan.

He said this conflict negatively affects the region's development.

The meeting also discussed cooperation between Azerbaijan and the Council of Europe, Azerbaijan's chairmanship at the Council of Europe and current issues on the agenda of the Council of Europe.

Azerbaijan assumed the chairmanship of the Committee when the council held its 124th session in the Austrian capital of Vienna in early May.

Azerbaijan's chairmanship of the Committee officially started on May 14, and will end in November when the country hands it over to Belgium.
