Azerbaijani ambassador to Finland Adish Mammadov has discussed ways of expanding the bilateral cooperation in the fields of economy and trade with Finland`s Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja.

Mammadov informed the Finnish minister of ongoing economic development processes in Azerbaijan, and political and legal reforms carried out in the country, AzerTag news agency reported.

He highlighted Azerbaijan-Europe relations, and the country's role in ensuring the continent's energy security.

Mammadov also touched on the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, saying the dispute has had a negative impact on the country`s development.

Mammadov said it was important that Europe paid more attention to the dispute.

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict emerged in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Since a lengthy war in the early 1990s that displaced over one million Azerbaijanis, Armenian armed forces have occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent regions.

The UN Security Council's four resolutions on Armenian withdrawal have not been enforced to this day.

Mammadov and Tuomioja also discussed regional security issues.

Tuomioja said Finland attached great importance to expanding cooperation with Azerbaijan.

Finland recognized independence of Azerbaijan on December 30, 1991 and diplomatic relations were established on March 24, 1992.

The ambassador of Azerbaijan Republic to the Kingdom of Sweden concurrently is accredited to Finland.
