Azerbaijan, EU to sign readmission agreement

By Nigar Orujova

The Council of the European Union has adopted a decision on the signing of an agreement between the EU and Azerbaijan on the readmission.

The readmission agreement will concern persons who do not have permission to stay or reside in the territory of the EU countries.

The EU reported that the decision was adopted at a meeting of EU Council that was held in Brussels. Last year, Azerbaijan and the EU signed a visa facilitation agreement, which reduces the amount of money Azerbaijani citizens have to pay for acquiring short-stay visas that allow them to travel throughout the Schengen area.

The document is expected to take effect after the signing of the readmission agreement.

Along with visa facilitation and readmission agreements, Azerbaijan- EU also have signed the mobility partnership in 2013.

The partnership establishes a number of political objectives, and identifies a number of areas in which further dialogue and cooperation between the EU and Azerbaijan will continue in order to ensure an effective management of immigrants.
