Victims of domestic violence decreased in Azerbaijan: official
By Jamila Babayeva
The number of victims of domestic violence has decreased in Azerbaijan, Chairwoman of State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs Hijran Huseynova told journalists on December 20.
"The increasing number of women experiencing domestic violence is not observed. Statistics confirm that the number has decreased," she said.
Huseynova believs that due to the works carried out by the State Committee for the prevention of such cases, the level of detection increased, and in society the impression is that the number of women who are victims of domestic violence is on the rise.
Unfortunately, in many cases, society in the form of populism informed about the facts related to domestic violence, she said.
"This attitude leads to negative consequences. As to name a person subjected to domestic violence, to discuss this person does not bring any positive results. Subtle approach is necessary for these moments," Huseynova added.
UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women Rashida Manjoo recently welcomed the progress made in combating violence against women in Azerbaijan.
"Work carried out to prevent all forms of violence against women in Azerbaijan is commendable," Manjoo said.
