Baku sees first snow, air and road traffic not affected

Baku experienced its first snowfall on Thursday morning, with snow depth ranging from one to 6 centimeters.

As temperatures dropped overnight, the Baku State Traffic Police issued a travel notice, advising the citizens to keep an eye out for black ice on the roads and sidewalks.

Baku State Traffic Police department head Vagif Asadov said drivers should reduce the pressure of the tires in snowy and frosty weather, adding that changing the tires to winter ones is also an important condition.

Drivers are also advised not to drive at high speed or travel in vehicles with faulty windows and "wipers".

Traffic Police also urges drivers to use public transport instead of personal cars due to the snow and freezing weather.

Meanwhile, Heydar Aliyev International Airport reported that the first snow in Baku did not affect the flights to and from Baku on December 12.

Sending and receiving aircrafts are carried out according to the schedule.

However, Turkish Airlines Company has canceled Istanbul-Baku flight due to adverse weather conditions in Turkey. The company canceled a total of 48 flights on December 12.

According to weather forecasts, unstable weather in Istanbul will continue until the end of the week.

The City Executive Power earlier reported that its crews will make consistent, coordinated efforts to keep the main throughways, including bus routes, bridges, and arterials, clear,.

Cold weather, sleet, and snow, and strong northerly wind in Baku and Absheron peninsula are expected to continue until the weekend. The temperature will be 0-3 degrees above zero at night and day.

The Ecology and Natural Ministry reported that snow and sleet will also observed in Azerbaijani regions. The temperature will be -6 -0 degrees at night and day, and fell to 18 degrees below zero on mountains.

The ministry also pointed out that the record snow depth on December 12 was recorded in Lerik region - 40 centimeters.
