Azerbaijan Railways launches renovated train
By Nazrin Gadimova
Azerbaijan Railways, the state-owned railway transport operator in the country, has received another refurbished train after its complete overhaul in neighboring Russia.
According to Azerbaijan Railways, the train's carriages have undergone major renovation in the repair shops in Voronezh, Russia and the Ukrainian city of Dnepropetrovsk.
"The new train with repaired carriages was launched on the Baku-Balakan rail line today," the company said in a statement.
Azerbaijan, which lacks rail carriage repair technology, earlier sent about 60 carriages to the Voronezh repair shop, 46 of which were delivered back after a complete overhaul. These carriages were launched on the Baku-Tbilisi, Baku-Moscow and Baku-Kharkiv lines.
Earlier, deputy head of Azerbaijan Railways JSC Gurban Nazirov said that in the framework of the renovation of the railcar depot 100 new carriages are to be purchased. Also, it is planned to buy 50 locomotives to transport cargo and 12 locomotives for passenger transportation.
Azerbaijan Railways ranks 57th in the world for the length of railroads. About 72 percent or 2,117 kilometers of the total length of operated rail lines is used for cargo transportation and does not include industrial rail lines.
