Biogenic substances amount above normal in Kur River
By Nigar Orujova
The National Monitoring Department on Environment of Azerbaijan's Environment and Natural Resources Ministry studied the level of pollution of the Kur and Araz rivers earlier this month, AzerTag state news agency reports.
The monitoring revealed that due to the impact of untreated waste water and the sewage industry dropped from the territory of Georgia and Armenia without preliminary treatment, the amount of biogenic substances in the Kur River and its tributaries exceeds the norms.
The level of phenol and copper in the water exceeded the norm in Aghstafachay River as well.
A similar situation was observed in the Aghstafachay reservoir, as well as Araz River.
The oxygen content of water at all the studied points varies within the health standards.
The Ministry regularly conducts monitoring and studies of the two rivers and often the results are not encouraging.
The amount of nutrients, the composition of specific contaminants of phenol and copper compounds have exceeded the norm repeatedly over the years, and the situation has not changed so far.
Experts regard phenol as one of the most dangerous types of industrial waste. Phenols are one of the most common pollutants entering surface waters with sewage from plants.
The Armenian side denies the pollution from its side and is doing nothing to improve the situation.
