Baku marks Nelson Mandela Int’l Day
An event to mark the Nelson Mandela International Day was organized by the United Nations Department of Public Information (UN DPI) at the Azerbaijan University of Languages, AzerTag state news agency reported.
The day endorsed by the UN General Assembly in 2009 is celebrated annually and internationally on July 18 to mark Mandela`s birthday.
As founding member of the ruling party African National Congress (ANC), Mandela was arrested in 1962 and sentenced to life imprisonment. He spent 27 years in prison but was unstoppable to lead strategic revolution against apartheid government.
When elected president in 1994 he did not call revenge and
retribution against whites, instead Mandela led a sensitive
reconciliation process that amazed many African and international
politicians. He campaigned for peace, unity and love among South
Africans of all race and tribe.
Because of his astonishing character, the UN General Assembly in
2009 proclaimed the annual International Mandela Day.
