A literary event devoted to an outstanding late Ukrainian scientist was held in Baku Slavic University as part of the Ukrainian Days of Culture in Azerbaijan on June 18.

"Alexander Bagriy's works played an important role in the development of Azerbaijani science," head of the Development and Peace organization, Namazali Mustafayev, said at the event, which was titled "Professor A.V. Bagriy and Azerbaijan".

Bagriy was born in Ukraine in 1891. He spent 26 years in Azerbaijan and throughout that period his work had been dedicated to the development of Azerbaijani science. He was closely involved in collecting, compiling, classifying, and translating Azerbaijani folklore, and wrote scientific articles.

Professor Bagriy worked at the Department of Russian Literature of Azerbaijan State University (now Baku State University) in the 1920s and trained a lot of scientists and specialists in folklore.

In 1930 he published a book entitled "Folklore of Azerbaijan and neighboring countries".

The Ukrainian scholar passed away in 1949.

The Baku event participants heard reports on the themes "The role of A.V. Bagriy in the organization of the bibliographic work in Azerbaijan", "The value of bringing Azerbaijani folk tales to a new generation in the legacy of A.V. Bagriy", "Activity of A.V. Bagriy in promoting Russian and Ukrainian poets and writers in Azerbaijan", "Ways to save and bring to a new generation the scientific heritage of A.V. Bagriy".

A video about A.Bagriy's life and work was shown at the event.

The Days of Culture were held in Baku and Hajigabul on June 16-19. Performance of the world-famous Ukrainian dance ensemble named after P.Virskiy, as well as Ukraine Today photo exhibition and presentation of a unique cultural project, "Amber mosaics", took place as part of the event.
