Member of the U.S. Congress from California Henry Waxman has sent a
letter congratulating the Azerbaijani community of America on the
95th anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.
"The Republic Day recognizes the establishment of a fledgling Azerbaijani republic that was ahead of its time in embracing a democratic model of governance with laws to grant universal suffrage and uphold civil rights," the letter reads.
Touching on the U.S.-Azerbaijan friendship, the Congressman said that he shares the appreciation for Azerbaijan's history and for the strategic significance of United States-Azerbaijan relations and assures that he will continue to support efforts to work with Azerbaijan and its neighbors to promote stability and prosperity in the region.
Earlier the Azerbaijani Consulate General in Los Angeles reported that the resolution dedicated to the 95th anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was adopted in California.
The resolution says that every year for the last 95 years, millions of Azerbaijanis around the globe, including tens of thousands in California, observe May 28 as the National Day, and remember the contribution of their forefathers to the spread of democracy in the regions of Caucasus, Central Asia and Middle East.
Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, the first secular democratic state of the Islamic world, which was established on May 28, 1918, was significant in Azerbaijan's history, and though it existed for only 23 months, ADR's government reached major progress in foreign policy and introduced Azerbaijan to the international community.
