FM: Poland ready to assist Azerbaijan within Eastern Partnership

Poland is ready to assist Azerbaijan within Eastern Partnership -- a program aiming to boost the EU`s cooperation with its ex-Soviet partners, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told media on a visit to Baku last week.

According to Sikorski, the areas of assistance may include strengthening borders, consular issues and preparing a database for the issuance of Schengen visas.

The Polish minister also expressed confidence that economic relations between the two countries would rise to the level of political relations.

``Energy was one of the main topics of our meetings in Baku,`` he said. ``Poland supports diversification of gas supply routes to Europe.``

Sikorski said that Azerbaijan would be interested in supplying gas to Bulgaria and Romania, and Warsaw is ready to assist it in this regard.

Regarding the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno Karabakh conflict, the Polish minister said Warsaw`s position on the issue remains unchanged.

``We support Azerbaijan`s territorial integrity,`` Sikorski said.

Sikorski said Poland does not support any political ties with the separatist regime of Nagorno Karabakh -- based in the Azerbaijani region, which has been occupied by neighboring Armenia since a 1990s war. He added that the conflict must be resolved peacefully.
