Turkey main cause of Stalin-Hitler clash: historians

The Turkish territory and straits passing through the country were
the cause of hostility between Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin and
the leader of Nazi Germany Adolph Hitler, Russian historians have
said.
According to newly-found archive materials of the Soviet Union, the head of the USSR Communist Party had offered Hitler to jointly launch a war against Turkey to take over the Chanaggala, Istanbul, Bosporus and Dardanelle straits. But the latter rejected the proposal, which turned the two superpowers into arch foes.
Prior to World War II, the USSR Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov had explicitly brought up the issue at a conference in Berlin, Russian media reported. However, differences on the issue caused the relations between the two countries to turn sour. During the war that followed, Hitler's key aim was to invade Soviet territory.
